Routine Cleanings & Exams
Regular checkups and professional cleanings to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
What's included in a routine exam and cleaning?
A routine dental visit includes a professional cleaning by the hygienist and a thorough exam by the dentist. Together, they give a complete picture of your oral health.
Professional scaling removes the plaque and tartar that build up on teeth over time, especially in areas that are hard to reach with a toothbrush or floss. Even with excellent home care, mineral deposits can collect along the gumline and between teeth.
Polishing follows scaling to smooth the tooth surfaces and remove light staining, leaving teeth clean and fresh.
The dental exam covers each tooth for signs of decay, wear, or cracking; a review of your gums and supporting bone; a bite evaluation; and an oral cancer screening. The dentist will talk through any findings with you and explain your options if follow-up is recommended.
X-rays are taken when they are due, based on your individual history. They show decay between teeth and bone levels, areas that cannot be seen during a visual exam alone.
Before you leave, the hygienist will share home-care advice suited to your mouth, whether that is brushing technique, flossing, or guidance on specific products.
How often should I come in?
For most patients, a cleaning and check-up every six months is a good baseline. That interval lets the team track changes over time and address anything early.
Some patients, especially those with a history of gum disease, higher cavity risk, or certain health conditions, may benefit from more frequent appointments. The hygienist and dentist will recommend a recall schedule based on your needs, and that recommendation may change as your oral health changes.
What to expect at your visit
Check-in and health history review
Your medical and dental history is updated at each visit. Changes in medications, health conditions, or concerns since your last appointment help the team provide safer, more personalized care.
X-rays if due
Digital x-rays are taken based on your history and risk level. They use much less radiation than older film-based systems and are reviewed by the dentist during your exam.
Professional cleaning by the hygienist
The hygienist removes tartar with scaling, then polishes your teeth. They will also floss between your teeth and point out any areas that need extra attention at home.
Exam by the dentist
The dentist examines your teeth, gums, bite, and oral tissues, reviews your x-rays, and talks through any findings in clear, straightforward terms.
Treatment recommendations if needed
If a concern is found, the dentist will explain the options, including what happens if you wait. There is no pressure. The goal is to help you make an informed decision.
Recall appointment scheduled
Before you leave, your next appointment is booked at the interval recommended for you, so your care stays on track.
Note for new patients
Your first visit may take a little longer than later appointments. The team takes time to set up baseline records, including a full set of x-rays if you don't have recent ones, so there is a complete picture of your oral health from day one. That time up front means future visits can be more focused and efficient.
