Dental Sealants

Protective coatings applied to teeth to prevent cavities, especially in hard-to-clean areas.

What are dental sealants?

Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, the molars and premolars. These surfaces are especially prone to decay because they have deep grooves and pits where food and bacteria collect, even with regular brushing.

Sealants fill in those grooves to create a smooth surface that is easier to clean. The material bonds directly to the enamel and acts as a physical barrier against the bacteria and acids that cause cavities.

Who can benefit from sealants?

Sealants are most often placed on children's permanent molars as they come in, typically between ages 6 and 12. Sealing early, before decay has a chance to start, is a practical way to protect newly erupted teeth during the years when cavity risk tends to be higher. They are often placed alongside children's exams and cleanings.

Sealants are not only for children. Adults with deep grooves in their back teeth and no existing decay or large fillings in those areas may also be good candidates. The team will assess your teeth and let you know whether sealants make sense for you.

What does the procedure involve?

Placing sealants is a straightforward, painless process with no drilling and no removal of tooth structure. The tooth is cleaned and dried, a mild conditioning solution is applied to help the sealant bond securely, and the sealant material is painted onto the chewing surface. A curing light hardens the material in place.

Each tooth takes only a few minutes. There is no recovery time, and you can eat and drink normally as soon as the appointment is over.

How long do sealants last?

With proper care, sealants can last several years. Their condition is checked at each recall visit, and they can be reapplied if they show signs of wear or chipping.

Sealants do not replace regular brushing, flossing, or dental visits. They work best as part of a complete preventive routine with fluoride treatments and good home care. They protect the chewing surfaces, but the sides of teeth and the spaces between them still need careful daily cleaning.
