CBCT Scans (Cone Beam CT)
3D imaging technology for detailed views of teeth, bone, and nerves. Often used when planning implants and other complex care.
What is a CBCT scan?
Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) produces a three-dimensional image of the teeth, jaws, and surrounding structures. Unlike traditional two-dimensional x-rays, CBCT lets the dentist evaluate bone volume, nerve pathways, and how structures sit in relation to each other much more clearly.
A CBCT scan can be viewed in cross-section from any angle, allowing a detailed look at bone density and the exact position of teeth.
When CBCT is recommended
CBCT is recommended when the extra detail is clinically useful. It is not used at every routine visit. Common reasons include:
- Planning dental implants
- Assessing impacted teeth, such as wisdom teeth
- Evaluating complex root anatomy before root canal treatment
- Looking at jaw or bone conditions in more detail
How it fits into your care
If CBCT is recommended, the dentist will explain why the scan is helpful and how the images will guide treatment decisions. The scan itself is non-invasive, usually takes under a minute, and involves no discomfort.
A CBCT scan delivers more radiation than a standard dental x-ray, so it is only used when the clinical benefit justifies it, and exposure is kept as low as reasonably achievable for the diagnostic need.
Results are reviewed with you so you understand the findings and how they shape your options. CBCT complements digital x-rays and a clinical exam rather than replacing them.
