Please call 780-432-3430 before arriving. The team will tell you how quickly you need to be seen and what to do in the meantime.
What counts as a dental emergency?
If you are unsure, call and describe your symptoms. Common emergencies include:
- Severe toothache that does not settle
- A knocked-out tooth (call immediately)
- A broken or cracked tooth with a sharp edge or significant pain
- A lost filling or crown that is painful or sharp
- Swelling of the face, jaw, or gums
- A suspected abscess
- Dental injury from an accident
What to do while you wait
Knocked-out tooth
- Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root.
- Rinse gently with clean water if it is dirty. Do not scrub.
- Keep the tooth moist: back in the socket if you can, or in milk, or between cheek and gum.
- Call immediately. Time matters.
Broken or chipped tooth
- Rinse with warm water.
- Use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek.
- Save any fragments if you can.
- Call to arrange prompt assessment.
Lost filling or crown
- Avoid chewing on that side.
- Pharmacy temporary cement can cover a sharp area until you are seen.
- Call to schedule repair.
Abscess or facial swelling
- Do not try to drain the area yourself.
- Call immediately.
- If swelling affects breathing or swallowing, go to a hospital emergency department without delay.
After hours
If you cannot reach the clinic and swelling is affecting breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest hospital emergency department.
For other concerns outside office hours, call and leave a message so the team can follow up when the office is open.
