Smile Makeovers

A plan that may combine cosmetic care, such as whitening, bonding, or veneers, based on an exam. The combination is different for each person.

Oral health comes first

A smile makeover is a coordinated plan that combines two or more cosmetic treatments to address your specific concerns. Every plan begins with a thorough oral health assessment. Any decay, gum disease, or other dental concerns are treated before cosmetic work is planned or done, because cosmetic work placed on an unhealthy foundation is unlikely to hold up well over time.

What a smile makeover involves

A smile makeover means planning and coordinating several cosmetic treatments together, rather than addressing each concern on its own. Looking at the teeth, gum line, and overall appearance together lets the plan address several concerns in a way that is cohesive and suited to your situation.

It is not a single procedure. It is a process that starts with a consultation, moves through any needed health treatment, and then on to the cosmetic phase when appropriate. The order and combination of treatments depend entirely on your dental health, concerns, and goals.

What concerns may be addressed

Depending on your situation, a coordinated cosmetic plan may address concerns such as:

  • Tooth discolouration or staining that has not responded well to routine whitening
  • Chipped, worn, or fractured tooth surfaces
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Teeth that look short, out of proportion, or uneven in size or shape
  • Mild crowding or misalignment that affects appearance
  • Gum line irregularities that affect how much of the teeth shows

How far these concerns can be addressed depends on your dental health, the anatomy of your teeth and gums, your goals, and practical considerations including budget and timeline.

Common treatment combinations

Whitening and bonding

Teeth whitening can address overall discolouration, while composite bonding can repair individual chips or close small gaps. These two treatments are often coordinated so the bonding is colour-matched to the whitened shade.

Veneers with whitening of nearby teeth

If veneers are placed on some teeth, the other visible teeth may be whitened so the overall appearance is consistent. Whitening is usually done before the veneers are made, so the veneer shade can be matched to the whitened teeth.

Orthodontics followed by whitening or bonding

In some cases, orthodontic treatment to improve alignment is a useful first step, especially when crowding or spacing limits which cosmetic treatments are practical. Whitening or bonding may then follow to address any remaining concerns.

Gum contouring with restorative or cosmetic work

When the gum line affects how the teeth look, gum contouring may be considered alongside other cosmetic treatment, though gum health must be confirmed before any soft tissue work is done.

The consultation process

A smile makeover consultation starts with listening to your concerns and understanding which parts of your smile you would like to change. The dentist then does a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, and bite.

From there, you will talk through the options that suit your situation, including what each involves, how long it takes, what maintenance it needs, how long it is likely to last, and what it costs. The goal is to give you a clear and realistic picture so you can make informed decisions.

Not every concern has a single solution, and some treatments may not be suitable depending on your dental health or tooth anatomy. The dentist will be straightforward about what is feasible and what trade-offs are involved. Some patients go ahead with a full plan; others choose to address one or two concerns at a time. The plan works around your priorities and timeline.
