Learn MoreMany dental problems begin in places a standard visual exam cannot reach. Cavities forming between teeth, infection developing around a root, early bone loss from gum disease, or the position of an impacted tooth all need imaging to be detected and monitored accurately.
Diagnostic tools also support more precise treatment. When the dentist can see the exact dimensions of a tooth, the shape of a root canal system, or the available bone before placing a dental implant, treatment can be planned with greater confidence and predictability.
The type and frequency of imaging recommended depend on your history, age, risk level, and what is being assessed. Imaging is always a clinical decision, and the dentist discusses the reason with you before going ahead.
Digital x-rays, intraoral photos, and CBCT scans show areas that cannot be seen in the mouth. They are taken when they will change the diagnosis or the plan, not automatically at every visit.
The dentist explains what an image shows before treatment is recommended.
This office uses digital x-rays. Doses are lower than older film. A lead apron is used when that is part of the office protocol. CBCT is reserved for planning implants and other complex care.
