New patients
What to expect
A first visit is usually longer than a routine checkup. Plan for about 90 minutes, though the time depends on what is needed.
What to bring
Bringing the right information helps the team provide more complete care at the first visit.
Health history information
A list of medications, allergies, and health conditions you already know about.
Dental insurance card
If you have coverage, bring the plan and member numbers. The office assists with claims. You can pay and be reimbursed, or the office can accept the insurer’s payment and keep a card on file for the balance.
Recent dental x-rays
If another office took them in the past year or two, you can request copies so they may not need to be repeated.
Photo ID
A piece of photo identification is helpful for the record.
How your first visit works
- 1
Arrive a little early
Plan to arrive about 10 minutes early so you can finish any remaining paperwork.
- 2
Health history
The team reviews medications, allergies, and health conditions you already know about. That information stays private and is used for your dental care.
- 3
Images if they are needed
If recent x-rays are not available, a set is taken so the dentist can see areas that are not visible in the mouth.
- 4
Exam
The dentist examines your teeth, gums, bite, jaw, and oral tissues, including an oral cancer screening, and reviews the images.
- 5
Cleaning when the visit allows
A cleaning may be done at the same visit if time and the findings allow. Sometimes it is booked separately.
- 6
A clear plan
If something needs attention, the dentist explains what was found, the options, and what may happen if you wait.
- 7
Next appointment
Before you leave, the team talks about the next visit, whether that is a checkup or treatment.
Your information is private
Health information collected at the office is used for your dental care. Records are confidential and are not shared without your consent except as required by law.
After the first visit
Many patients are then seen about every six months. The interval can be different if the dentist recommends it. Call 780-432-3430 if you have a question after you leave.
