Space Maintainers
Devices to hold space for permanent teeth after early tooth loss.
Why space matters when a primary tooth is lost early
Primary (baby) teeth do more than help children chew. They act as placeholders that guide the developing permanent teeth into the right position as they come in. When a primary tooth is lost too early, whether from decay, injury, or an extraction, the teeth on either side may gradually drift into the empty space.
If that happens, the permanent tooth meant to fill that spot may not have enough room to come in normally. The result can be crowding, misalignment, or an impacted permanent tooth, all of which may need more involved treatment later.
Care from a general dentist
Dental services for children at Rabbit Hill Family Dentistry are provided by a general dentist, not a licensed specialist in pediatric dentistry.
What a space maintainer does
A space maintainer is a passive appliance. It does not move teeth. It simply holds the gap open so the neighbouring teeth cannot drift. It is custom-made to fit your child's mouth and is removed once the permanent tooth is ready to come into that space.
Types of space maintainers
Band and loop (fixed)
The most common type for children. A metal band is cemented around a neighbouring tooth, and a wire loop holds the space open. Fixed maintainers stay in place without your child needing to manage them.
Removable
Some older children may be candidates for a removable appliance, similar to a retainer. These need a child who will wear and care for it consistently.
Does every early tooth loss need a space maintainer?
No. Whether a space maintainer is needed depends on several things: which tooth was lost, your child's age, how much the jaw has already developed, and how close the permanent tooth is to coming in. The dentist uses x-rays to see where the permanent tooth is and makes a recommendation based on what they show.
For example, if a primary tooth is lost close to when it would have fallen out on its own, and the permanent tooth is near the surface, a maintainer may not be necessary.
What to expect and how to care for it
Space maintainers are checked at each regular dental appointment to make sure they are still in the right position. They are removed once the permanent tooth begins to come into the space.
Care at home means brushing carefully around the appliance and avoiding sticky or chewy foods. Caramel, gummy candies, and similar treats can loosen or bend the appliance. If the maintainer feels loose or uncomfortable, call the office at 780-432-3430 so the dentist can check it.
